Subcontracting and Partnership Exchange - Sri Lanka (SPX)

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in association with Ministry of Industrial Development, launched Sri Lanka’s first Subcontracting and Partnership Exchange (SPX) on the 24th May 2001. This project was launched by Hon. Prof. G L Peiris, Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development. SPX is a component of the UNIDO Integrated Industrial Development Support Programme for Sri Lanka, which was launched in 1999. The SPX is hosted by SMED (Small and Medium Enterprise Developers) which is the SME development arm of the Federation of Chambers of commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL).

SPX is a center for Industrial Subcontracting and Partnership between main-contractors, suppliers and subcontractors. This center compiles technical and other and information on potential and existing sub-contractors and main contractors. The SPX also facilitates matchmaking between main contractors and subcontractors on specific requirements.

Presently the center covers five industrial sectors namely, Engineering/Machinery, Electrical/Electronics, Plastic, Rubber and Coconut fiber (Coir). The centre will be linked to 62 International Subcontracting centers set up by UNIDO in 31 countries facilitating local industrialists to get information on Subcontracting, and other related areas. Initially, Sri Lanka is linked to the Indian Network, which comprises 9 centers.

SPX office is housed in the host organization, which is situated in the heart of Colombo city. Colombo is the Commercial Capital of Sri Lanka with a population of about 2.2 millions Colombo has a strategically located seaport. Most Government offices and Diplomatic Missions are located in Colombo. Colombo is also the capital of Western Province where largest number of industries are located. Sri Lanka’s largest free trade zones are also within 30 km from Colombo city.
