Event Organizer

The principal organizing body for the “Hands Lanka 2009” Handicraft & Giftware Exhibition is none other than the Small & Medium Enterprise Developers (SMED) of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) the largest and most representative apex business organization of the Sri Lankan private sector business. The FCCISL is also the most widely spread business organization with member bodies from all districts and provinces of Sri Lanka.

SMED is a project of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, established in 1989 to promote and foster SMEs and in general the industry and business sector of Sri Lanka.

 

With a nationwide membership of over 55 chambers of Commerce and business associations, FCCISL espouses the shared vision of Sri Lankan businesses and speaks directly and indirectly to over 15,000 large, medium and small segments of manufacturing, distributive trade & services spread both locally and internationally.

 

FCCISL is also the nodal point for the Sri Lankan chapters of; Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI), SAARC Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) & World Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (WASME) and hence fully equipped to provide leadership to this years’ trade fair, which endeavors to create “Local Handicraft & Global Market” the theme of this prestigious Handicrafts and Giftware Exhibition.

This exposition is a joint initiative of SMED of FCCISL, Handwerkskammer Koblenz of Germany and National Chamber of Handicrafts in Sri Lanka together with the Ministry of Rural Industries.

 

Why participate in “Hands Lanka 2009” Handicraft & Giftware Exhibition

“Hands Lanka 2009” Handicraft & Giftware Exhibition is held at Kandy, the heart of Handicraft & Giftware artisans. There are quite number of such artisans around Kandy and have been practicing the arts and crafts for centuries.

The timing:

clip_image002This event is held during the world famous, one of the biggest Buddhist celebrations of the year in Kandy, the annual Esala Perahera. This is a religious ceremony during which devotees pray for good rains to cultivate the crops. One of Buddhism’s most sacred relics, the Sacred Tooth is taken from the Temple of the Tooth and paraded through the streets.

Following this, more festive events take centre stage and visitors can expect to see a lively cast of dancers, jugglers and fire-breathers milling amongst the crowds. Therefore it all blends together, the culture, art and a craft ad tradition of Sri Lanka which also attracts the tourists coming to Sri Lanka.
